CLASSICAL MUSIC GENRES – Concerto Grosso Form

A concerto grosso form typically features a solo instrument or group accompanied by an orchestra. The soloist often takes center stage in fast-paced virtuosic passages and melodic lines. The orchestra provides harmonic support and rhythmic accompaniment to the soloist's melodic phrases. In contrast, slower movements may feature more equal dialogue between soloist and ensemble. This form allows for a range of emotional expression and technical display from the soloist. The concerto grosso often employs complex structures and unexpected surprises in its musical narrative.
