Sunflowers ripen their seeds as they dry on the plant during harvest time. The bright yellow petals fall away, revealing the dark centers of the mature flowers Farmers cut off the seed heads, leaving a small portion of stem intact The harvested sunflower stalks are bundled together and left to dry further After drying, the seeds are removed from the plant and used for cooking or planting
