Definition
The District of Columbia is a federal district that serves as the capital of the United States. It is located on the East Coast, bordering the states of Maryland and Virginia to the north and south, respectively. As a district rather than a state, it does not have the same powers or representation as states do at the federal level. The District of Columbia has a population of over 700,000 people and is home to many national landmarks and institutions, including the White House, Capitol Building, and Smithsonian museums.
