Energy is the ability to do work, defined as force times distance traveled. Mechanical energy is the sum of kinetic and potential energy in motion. In a closed system, energy cannot be created or destroyed only converted. Electromagnetic radiation transfers energy through waves or particles such as light photons. Heat transfer occurs when there is an imbalance in thermal energy storage.
