Wilfrid Laurier was a Canadian politician who served as Prime Minister from 1896 to 1911. He led the Liberal Party and implemented progressive policies including universal healthcare and women's suffrage Laurier was born in Quebec City, Canada East (now Quebec) in 1841 to French-Canadian parents. He studied law at McGill University and became a lawyer in 1864 As Prime Minister, Laurier worked to promote Canadian independence and unity. He opposed British involvement in domestic affairs and advocated for greater autonomy for the provinces Laurier's government also introduced the National Policy, which included tariffs on imported goods to protect Canadian industries. This policy helped to stimulate economic growth and development across Canada
