Alexander Mackenzie was a Scottish-born Canadian politician who served as the second Prime Minister of Canada from 1873 to 1878. He was a prominent figure in the Clear Grit movement and led the government during a time of economic depression Mackenzie's administration focused on reducing debt, improving infrastructure, and promoting education and trade Despite his efforts, Mackenzie's government faced significant challenges and ultimately lost re-election in 1878
